Absence of photophysiological response to iron addition in autumn phytoplankton in the Antarctic sea-ice zone

چکیده

Abstract. The high nutrient–low chlorophyll condition of the Southern Ocean is generally thought to be caused by low bioavailability micronutrients, particularly iron, which plays an integral role in phytoplankton photosynthesis. Nevertheless, experiences seasonal blooms that initiate austral spring, peak summer, and extend into autumn. This increase primary productivity typically linked characteristics nutrient light supply. To better understand potential limitations on Antarctic sea-ice zone (SIZ), photophysiological response iron addition (2.0 nM FeCl3) was investigated during autumn along coast off Dronning Maud Land. Five short-term (24 h) incubation experiments were conducted around Astrid Ridge (68∘ S) a 6∘ E transect, where bloom identified region western SIZ. Surface concentrations ranged from 0.27 1.39 Ridge, 0.56 0.63 transect. Contrary expectation, addition, measured through photosynthetic efficiency absorption cross-section for photosystem II, showed no significant responses. It thus proposed since SIZ exhibited lack limitation at time sampling, ambient may have been sufficient fulfil cellular requirements. provides new insights extended replete post-bloom conditions assumed deficient Ocean.

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

Response of Phytoplankton Photophysiology to Varying Environmental Conditions in the Sub-Antarctic and Polar Frontal Zone

Climate-driven changes are expected to alter the hydrography of the Sub-Antarctic Zone (SAZ) and Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ) south of Australia, in which distinct regional environments are believed to be responsible for the differences in phytoplankton biomass in these regions. Here, we report how the dynamic influences of light, iron and temperature, which are responsible for the photophysiologic...

Phytoplankton blooms beneath the sea ice in the Chukchi sea

In the Arctic Ocean, phytoplankton blooms on continental shelves are often limited by light availability, and are therefore thought to be restricted to waters free of sea ice. During July 2011 in the Chukchi Sea, a large phytoplankton bloom was observed beneath fully consolidated pack ice and extended from the ice edge to 4100 km into the pack. The bloom was composed primarily of diatoms, with ...
